Take Action: Tell President Obama to dump DOMA

No two ways about it: The so-called "Defense of Marriage Act" is a mean-spirited and damaging law that hurts gay and lesbian couples and their families.

DOMA excludes same-sex couples from more than a thousand federal responsibilities and protections of marriage, including Social Security survivor benefits and equal immigration treatment. DOMA even prevents married gay couples from filing joint federal tax returns and pooling resources without being unfairly taxed.

Despite the clear harm that DOMA causes to gay and lesbian families and President Obama's stated support for repealing DOMA, the Department of Justice has issued court briefs defending federal marriage discrimination.

Tell President Obama to uphold his promise to end federal marriage discrimination and dump DOMA:

Today, the Federal District Court in Boston will hear oral arguments on the constitutionality of DOMA. Our partners at Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) filed the lawsuit on behalf of seven married same-sex couples and three widowers hurt by DOMA.

From denial of survivor benefits to denial of health insurance coverage on a federal family plan, all of these couples' rights have been violated. Because they were unable to file jointly as married, some were even denied Social Security death and widower benefits and the payment of federal income taxes.

The Department of Justice has filed a motion to dismiss GLAD's lawsuit.

Married same-sex couples should be treated equally, not slapped in the face with a double standard.

Tell President Obama that it's time to live up to his promises and dump DOMA:
