Immigration Equality ~ Policy Director
Position Location: Washington, DC

Immigration Equality is a national not-for-profit organization fighting for equal immigration rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT), and HIV-positive immigrants and their families.  Based in New York City, Immigration Equality provides direct legal services to LGBT and HIV-positive immigrants and asylum seekers and works to change U.S. immigration law. 

Immigration Equality seeks a mature, creative Policy Director to represent the organization in Washington.  The Policy Director will provide strong leadership and strategic direction for Immigration Equality’s policy agenda, including the nationwide movement to pass the Uniting American Families Act, ending the HIV immigration ban, and creating fully inclusive comprehensive immigration reform.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Building genuine, productive coalitions with immigration, LGBT, HIV, labor, and progressive allies;
  • Writing and disseminating policy papers and reports on the discrimination LGBT and HIV-positive individuals face under U.S. immigration law;
  • Generating administrative and legislative solutions for ending that discrimination;
  • Opening Immigration Equality’s first office in Washington, DC;
  • Supervising staff as needed.
  • Monthly travel to New York City

The right person for the job will have:

  • At least five years of experience working on Capitol Hill or in the executive branch, including work as a lobbyist or staffer to a government official or as a policy expert with a public interest organization.
  • Significant professional knowledge of U.S. immigration law and policy;
  • Proven excellent writing skills;
  • A bachelor’s degree is required; advanced degree in law or public administration preferred.

Additionally, preference will be given to applicants with one or more of the following qualifications:

  • Experience with legislative research and tracking;
  • Experience with House and Senate Judiciary Committees
  • Knowledge of the Executive Branch, particularly DHS and DOS
  • Spanish language fluency

Executive Assistant - New York City

Position Summary

The Executive Assistant is an experienced organizer or project manager responsible for independent project management and support of the Executive Director and the Senior Management Team of the Arcus Foundation.  The Executive Assistant directly assists the Executive Director in managing and running all parts of the Foundation's operations, supports and organizes many aspects of the meetings of the Arcus Board of Directors, schedules and coordinates all aspects of organizational retreats, special meetings and management team agendas and meetings. This position is a first point of contact with the ED for people seeking meetings, grant seekers, colleagues and partners.  It requires excellent communication skills, a proactive approach to information, discretion, skillful project management on multiple fronts simultaneously, good decision making ability and judgment, and independent thinking, to keep information flowing between the ED, external constituents and all parts of the organization.

Program Assistant - New York City

Position Summary

The Program Assistant provides administrative and program-related support to the Director of Grant Making Programs, the Deputy Program Director and a Senior Program Officer in the New York City office.  S/he is also a member of the administrative staff in New York City. Duties include: scheduling, meeting and travel planning; responding to all external inquiries about grant funding and support in carrying out grant making processes; assistance with organizing internal meetings, convenings and communications; conducting background research on non-profit organizations, other funders and specific issue areas; scheduling meetings with grant seekers and attending, as needed; and providing a wide range of administrative support to the Director of Grant Making Programs and to senior program staff in the New York City office.

A volunteer news poster is sought for To Form a More Perfect Union: Marriage Equality News.

The news poster would join the two existing bloggers for posting duties two or three days a week, as well as occasional fill-in coverage in event of vacations or emergencies.

Duties require an hour or two a day at your convenience. We will provide you with search engine materials and the (minimal) training required to search for materials to post and to format them for the weblog.

Executive Director

Position Description: The Executive Director serves as spokesperson for the organization within the LGBT community, its partners, elected officials and the media. The Executive Director, with the support of the Development Director, carries primary responsibility for raising the funds necessary to support the organization’s activities. The incumbent executes and administers the policies as set forth in the regulations and procedures prescribed by the Board, pursuant to its authority under the Task Force bylaws, is responsible for the administration and coordination of the functions of the organization and will recruit, hire, direct and manage the activities of any and all employees and volunteers of the Task Force. The Executive Director is responsible for the efficient running of all facilities and offices of the Task Force and, reporting to the Board of Directors, exercises supervision over the management and support of all personnel. This position may be based in either New York City or Washington, D.C.

Equality North Carolina

Community Organizer

Position Description:

This full-time position coordinates field and volunteer activities in support of Equality North Carolina’s agenda.

The Field Organizer will manage Equality North Carolina’s volunteer and grassroots organizing program to enhance Equality North Carolina’s grassroots lobbying power, strengthen our base of activists and supporters, support pro-equality candidates, educate North Carolinians about LGBT issues, and engage key business and civic leaders in ways likely to influence decision-makers. This position reports to the Executive Director.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing plans for grassroots organizing
  • Developing a schedule of outreach and visibility events designed to engage local activists and increase number of identified supporters
  • Identifying, recruiting and training supporters to tell stories of how discrimination has affected their lives
  • Managing voter contact program
  • Supporting organizing in targeted communities to secure local policy victories
  • Identifying and cultivating allies among local religious, social justice and political organizations for coalition-building and to increase awareness of Equality North Carolina’s agenda
  • Working with staff to ensure that volunteer opportunities are meaningful and likely to lead to sustained commitment and leadership among activists
  • Working with the Executive Director and staff to manage grassroots lobbying campaign, including coordinating constituent contacts and tracking legislative activity
  • Recruiting and managing interns
  • Accurately tracking and assessing volunteer productivity, and
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • A demonstrated commitment to equal rights and justice for LGBT people
  • Previous organizing experience on political or issue-advocacy campaigns
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate ideas and prepare analyses
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including those necessary to build and maintain harmonious relationships and interact well with others
  • Highly organized and resourceful
  • Ability to to prioritize, work independently, solve problems, complete tasks, and manage a number of simultaneous projects, with minimal supervision
  • Ability to adjust to changing priorities and circumstances
  • Be computer-proficient and have a solid working knowledge of  Microsoft Word, Excel, and the Internet
  • Be willing to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends
  • Have reliable transportation and willingness to travel within North Carolina

COLAGE's National Program Coordinator supports and oversees programs with and for diverse populations of children, youth, and adults who have one or more LGBTQ parents nationally. Primary responsibilities are planning and executing local and regional events often in partnership with other organizations; coordination of pen pal, scholarship and online community programs for constituents; and overall support of the Program Director and COLAGE national programs.  The Coordinator is also responsible for targeted outreach, information gathering and organizing with and among youth of color in mixed race/ethnicity families and families of color, and related program development, volunteer recruitment and management, program evaluation, administration, reporting, media relations and fundraising support.

The range of tasks is varied and must be completed in a fast-paced, supportive and fun environment. This is a position for an energetic, motivated and highly organized candidate and is an outstanding opportunity to help grow a leading youth, LGBT, family organization working for social justice.
