Colorado House Committee to vote on civil union bill on Thursday
May 02, 2012
This just in from our friends at One Colorado: the House Judiciary Committee will vote on the civil union bill tomorrow, Thursday May 2nd. Tomorrow's vote comes on the heels of a successful vote in the State Senate where the civil union bill passed with bipartisan support.
Of the 11 members of the committee, all five Democrats have committed to advancing the bill to the House floor. Once on the House floor, the bill is expected to pass, meaning that securing one Republican vote on committee tomorrow is absolutely crucial.
If you're in Colorado, time is running out for you to take action! Tens of thousands of Coloradans have already contacted Republican members of the committee in the past week, but we have to keep up the pressure.
Click here to send a message to to Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee urging them to advance the bill to the House for a floor vote. Also, be sure to join One Colorado tomorrow for a rally in support of civil unions at the State Capitol at noon. Info for the rally can be found at the Facebook event.
Below is the email that went out to our members in Colorado moments ago urging folks around the state to take action before tomorrow's vote:
Last week, the civil union bill passed the Colorado Senate with strong bipartisan support. The bill now moves to the House where it faces the toughest challenge yet- the House Judiciary Committee.
Right now, we’re only one vote short of passing the civil union bill out of committee and need your help to secure the vote we need.
Momentum to pass the civil union bill is in our side. Governor Hickenlooper urged the Legislature to pass the bill in his State of the State address and all of the Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee have committed their support. More importantly, supporters like you have made an enormous impact in Denver by generating tens of thousands of postcards, emails and phone calls to key legislators.
But we can’t let up now. Passing the bill through the House Judiciary Committee is our toughest hurdle yet; last year we fell one vote short of advancing the bill to the House floor.
Freedom to Marry is proud to stand with our friends at One Colorado and allies in the Legislature to urge the passage of this crucial legislation. We have a tough fight ahead of us to ensure that all Colorado families are protected but we know that we can count on you and our thousands of supporters throughout the state to take action in the final push.
Thanks for all you’ve done and continue to do to end discrimination against gay and lesbian families in Colorado.
