National advertising campaign demonstrates bipartisan support for the freedom to marry

Today, the Respect for Marriage Coalition launched an unprecedented national advertising campaign featuring prominent bipartisan leaders speaking out in favor of the freedom to marry for same-sex couples. The national television, print, and online advertising campaign sends the message that it's #Time4Marriage.

A television ad featuring prominent administration officials speaking out in support of marriage, titled "Leadership," began airing today on cable and will air over the coming weeks. The ad features President Barack Obama, Former Vice President Dick Cheney, Former First Lady Laura Bush, and Former Secretary of Defense Colin Powell explaining that they support ending the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage. Watch the 30-second advertisement below.

Also running this week in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post is a full-page color advertisement (PDF) featuring the same officials sharing their views on the freedom to marry.

The Respect for Marriage Coalition is a partnership of more than 80 civil rights, faith, health, labor, business, legal, LGBT, student, and women's organizations working to overturn the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, which prohibits federal respect for legal marriages between same-sex couples. Freedom to Marry is proud to co-chair the Respect for Marriage Coalition alongside the Human Rights Campaign.

Over the coming weeks, the Respect for Marriage Coalition plans to spend more than $1 million to run the #Time4Marriage advertisements so that we can continue to build the momentum and grow the bipartisan majority for marriage.
