Poll: 53% of Australians support the freedom to marry

"A poll has revealed that a majority of Australians supports marriage for same-sex couples.

"Fifty three per cent of people said they see no reason why unions of same-sex couples should not be legal, according to tomorrow’s Essential Report.

"Just 36% of Australians believe the law should remain unchanged to only recognize marriage as being between a man and a woman. The remaining 11% are undecided.

"The poll follows Federal Parliament’s decision to hear calls for all MPs to gauge their constituents on the question ahead of a formal debate on marriage equality.

"A number of federal Liberal MPs have privately expressed support for the freedom to marry, the Australian Greens say.

"Greens sexuality spokesperson, Sarah Hanson-Young, said her marriage equality bill would 'sit on the tables' until the major parties allowed a conscience vote on the freedom to marry, reports News.com.au.

"But she indicated that many Liberal MPs disagreed with opposition leader Tony Abbott's conservative position.

"'Some of them have already come forward over the last few weeks and there will be more,' she said."
