Respect for Marriage Coalition launches third national television ad
March 22, 2013
Today, the Respect for Marriage Coalition launched the third television advertisement in its series of national ads designed to demonstrate broad public support for the freedom to marry for same-sex couples. The ad, "Journey," features real people explaining how they have grown to support the freedom to marry and come to understand that discriminating against committed same-sex couples is wrong.
The new ad will begin running during network TV shows this Sunday, March 24 and run through the following weekend on national cable and network channels. It will run the same week that the U.S. Supreme Court hears oral arguments in the legal challenges against Proposition 8, which stripped same-sex couples in California of the freedom to marry, and the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, which denies legally married same-sex couples of the more than 1,000 protections and responsibilities of marriage.
The speakers in the ad name their loved ones and friends as reasons they support marriage for same-sex couples: daughters, sister-in-laws, brothers, business partners, mothers, neighbors.
The Respect for Marriage Coalition is the robust and broad-based partnership of more than 100 civil rights, faith, health, labor, business, legal, LGBT, student, and women's organizations working to end DOMA and grow support for the freedom to marry. Freedom to Marry is proud to co-chair the Coalition with the Human Rights Campaign.
